Biblical Authority is a Sacred Stewardship—Not a Platform for Power

FOCUS TEXT: Exodus 20:12

This weekend at Anchor Church, we continued our series, “TEN COMMANDMENTS: Law That Leads to Life,” returning to the pivotal fifth commandment: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12, ESV) This commandment stands as the hinge between loving God (the first four commands) and loving others (the last six). It’s not just a word for children or parents, but a blueprint for how all of us understand and live under authority as God designed.

Truth #1: Biblical Authority Begins with the LORD — All authority flows from God’s character and rule. He is the true King—His authority isn’t for control, but for the good of His people. Every parent, leader, and pastor is given authority as a stewardship, not for personal gain, but to reflect God’s heart. Before we talk about human leadership, we start with the sovereignty, goodness, and justice of God Himself.

Truth #2: Human Authority Is a Stewardship, Not a Right — Authority is never a license for self-interest or control. Whether at home, in church, or in the world, leadership is entrusted by God to serve, protect, and equip others. Abuse of authority breeds distrust and wounds, but biblical authority looks like Jesus—humble, sacrificial, and aimed at the flourishing of others.

Truth #3: The Family Is the First School of Honor — The home is the starting place for learning honor and respect. Fathers and mothers are called to lead with humility and grace; children are called to receive instruction and respond with honor. Even when our family stories are marked by brokenness, God’s grace enables us to restore what’s been lost, and the church becomes a spiritual family where honor can be learned and lived out.

Truth #4: When Authority Breaks Down, Everyone Suffers — Whether through neglect, abuse, or rebellion, the breakdown of authority brings pain and confusion. Scripture is honest about these failures—yet also points us to healing in Jesus, who restores both those who’ve been hurt by leadership and those who have failed to lead well.

Truth #5: Honor and Authority Are a Witness to the World — God’s design for honor isn’t just about the home—it’s about showing the world what His kingdom is like. When we live with humility, integrity, and sacrificial love—whether in our homes, church, or workplaces—we reflect the heart of Christ and invite others to see the beauty of God’s authority.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

      • Where has your view of authority been shaped more by pain or culture than by God’s Word?

      • In what areas of life do you need to reflect Christ’s humility as you lead or serve?

      • Who do you need to honor in your home, your church, or your community this week?

PRAYER RESPONSE — Father, thank You for being the perfect example of authority. Forgive us for dishonoring others or misusing influence. Heal the wounds we carry, and shape us to lead, serve, and honor with the heart of Christ. May our church be a family where honor and grace are lived out for the world to see. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

MEMORY VERSE — “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12, ESV)
