Kingdom Women: Faithful, Bold, and Empowered
FOCUS TEXT: Romans 16:1–16
This weekend at Anchor Church, we turned to Romans 16 for a powerful Mother’s Day message—a passage often skipped, yet filled with truth about how God builds His church through the full body of Christ, including faithful, Spirit-empowered women. Paul ends his letter not with theological debate, but with a roll call of names—many of them women—who helped shape the early church. These women weren’t included as footnotes. They were leaders, servants, mentors, and laborers for the gospel—playing an essential role alongside their brothers in Christ.
Truth #1: Kingdom Women Carry the Gospel with Courage — Romans 16:1–2 introduces Phoebe, a servant of the church who likely carried Paul’s letter to the Romans. Paul calls her a diakonos—a word used elsewhere for deacons—and a patron who supported gospel work. In a culture that often marginalized unmarried women, Phoebe stood as a trusted leader and ministry partner. Her courage and character advanced the mission of Jesus.
Truth #2: Kingdom Women Disciple with Wisdom and Faithfulness — Romans 16:3–5 highlights Priscilla and Aquila—co-laborers with Paul who hosted a church in their home. Priscilla is noted for her theological depth, helping correct and encourage Apollos in Acts 18. Her leadership through discipleship and hospitality made her vital to early church growth and unity.
Truth #3: Kingdom Women Labor with Endurance — Romans 16:6 and 12 name four women—Mary, Tryphaena, Tryphosa, and Persis—who “worked hard in the Lord.” Paul uses the same word for their labor that he uses for his own—kopiaō, meaning to toil with great effort. These women served faithfully behind the scenes, reminding us that gospel work often happens quietly—but leaves lasting impact.
Truth #4: Kingdom Women Endure Suffering and Are Honored — Romans 16:7 introduces Junia, a faithful servant known and respected by the apostles. Junia endured prison for her faith and was honored for her steadfastness. Her example reminds us that godly character and endurance—not titles—define true spiritual influence.
Truth #5: Kingdom Women Nurture and Strengthen the Family of God — Romans 16:13 describes Rufus’s mother as a spiritual mother to Paul himself. Her faithful care shaped and supported a leader of the early church. Her example highlights the sacred role of spiritual motherhood—offering wisdom, strength, and encouragement to others in the body of Christ.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:
How are you using your season and influence for the sake of the gospel?
Who are the spiritual mothers or mentors you can thank or learn from?
What steps can you take to honor and empower the women God has placed around you?
PRAYER RESPONSE: Father, thank You for the courageous, faithful women who serve Your kingdom. Strengthen and raise up more women who love You deeply and lead with grace and truth. May we honor and empower them to live boldly for Your mission. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
MEMORY VERSE: “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae… for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.” — Romans 16:1–2 (ESV)
