NEW SERIES: “We Are Family”
FOCUS TEXT: Ephesians 2:17-19
During our Family Gathering last Sunday, we embarked on a journey into a brand new series titled “We Are Family.” Over the next 12 weeks, we will consider God’s design for His family, delving into subjects like: becoming a part of God’s family, belonging as members of the family, the beauty of diversity within our faith family, the vital importance of unity, the significance of baptism and communion, servant leadership within the family (including roles like Eldership and Deacon ministry), the process of maturing in God’s family through discipleship, being accountable to one another, understanding our responsibilities as family members, the mission of God as the family business, and contemplating when and how one should transition out of a local church family.
I introduced the series by briefly considering Ephesians 2:17-19, which reads: “And He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.”
From this passage, we gleaned three significant insights:
God unites both insiders and outsiders in one family. Verse 17 underscores Christ's mission to preach peace to both those who were near (Jews) and those who were far off (Gentiles). This message of peace transcends cultural, ethnic, and social boundaries, offering reconciliation to all who embrace Him.
Through the work of Christ and the indwelling of God’s Spirit, we are made ONE. Verse 18 elucidates that through Christ, both Jews and Gentiles are adopted and brought into one family with God as our Father.
We find belonging and love as cherished members of God’s family. Verse 19 emphasizes our transformation from aliens to beloved members of God’s family through our relationship with Christ, where we experience the warmth of familial love.

What are the characteristics of a church that walks in unity as a closely-knit family?
What obstacles might a church encounter when it comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds?
In what ways can a diverse congregation exemplify the grace and power of God?
PRAYER FOCUS:
Let’s ask God to guide our evolving faith family towards unity in Christ. Ask Him to empower us to emulate Christ's love for the Church. Take a moment to consider how you can extend love to someone new within the Anchor Church community this week.
